During lectures, we give in-class exercises (ranging from multiple choice to fill-in-the-blank to write an explanation). Together, these questions will be called a “diagnostic”. Each individual question given in lecture will be graded on a 0-1 basis. Your total score on the diagnostic will be the percentage of questions you got correct. We will drop your two lowest diagnostic scores.

The “First Attempt”

If you attend lecture on a given day, you will be given a chance to work on the in-class exercises fully collaboratively for large chunks of lecture. Additionally, course staff will be roaming the room during these periods answering questions and helping you out! Note that if you miss a significant portion of the lecture, we reserve the right to not give you credit for attempt 1.

The “Second Attempt”

If you do not go to lecture (or you want to improve your score on a diagnostic from lecture that you didn’t get completely correct), you are eligible to complete the “second attempt” outside of class. On all second attempts, you will be required to explain all of your answers for every question (regardless of what answers you got right on the first attempt if you did it). For the second attempt, you can only collaborate with students currently in the course. Course staff will not be able to help with second attempt diagnostics at office hours. The second attempts will always be due a week from the lecture that the first attempt was given in.
